Root Canal Therapy

In the past, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you’d probably lose that tooth. For many, just hearing the words “root canal” brings to mind thoughts of medieval torture and great discomfort. The misery associated with this procedure is nothing more than a myth, stemming from the primitive early days of dental techniques. In reality, it is a gentle procedure that relieves (not causes) pain. When you visit Dr. William J. Cruse, you can rest assured that you are in the best hands, of a skilled and compassionate dental professional and you will receive the best Dental Root Canal Treatment possible.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is the tubular space in the middle of a tooth root, which houses soft tissues known as dental pulp, as well as the nerve.

Signs that you might need root canal treatment

Inside each tooth is the pulp which provides nutrients and nerves to the tooth, it runs like a thread down through the root. When the pulp or nerve are damaged or injured, the pulp tissue dies. When the dental pulp is dead it begins decomposing and bacteria begin multiplying.

The resulting infection creates pressure inside the tooth and aggravates the nerve. Once damaged, the pulp and nerve will not recover.

If you don’t remove the dead tissue,
you could loose your tooth.

Symptoms you might Root Canal Treatment include

  • Abscesses (pus pockets on the gums or around the teeth)

  • Frequent or chronic toothache

  • Sensitivity to temperature or pressure

  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth

What to expect

The procedure is straightforward and enjoys great success. Before Dr. William J. Cruse begins, he will numb the area completely to ensure your comfort. He will create an opening in the tooth, to access the canal and pulp chamber. The pulp, nerve, and decayed tissue are removed using a special file, and the tooth is disinfected. When complete, the tooth is filled. The process is very similar to having a cavity filled, though it takes a bit longer.

Following treatment, the toothaches, sensitivity, and abscesses cease. In the follow-up visits, in most cases, the treated tooth will be topped with a beautiful porcelain crown, to prevent any future damage and restore your smile.
